Shaman:Back to basics by Vneck

Totems: The most iconic ability of the Shaman, they allow great buffs for the Shaman and his allies. There are four types of totems that you can place down, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Each element has Several different totems that can be placed down, with a maximum of four totems at once.

Earth Totems:

Tremor Totem: In my opinion, this is the most valuable of all the earth totems. Upon dropping tremor totem, you will break any fear effects on yourself, as well as breaking fear effects on all your party members within a 30 yard range (39 yard with 2/2 Totemic Reach)

Strength of Earth Totem: Adding 549 Agility and Strength to all party members within 52 yards, this totem is great for playing with physical damage-doers. The slight downside to this ability, is that it does NOT stack with Horn of Winter or Battle shout.

Stoneskin Totem: This totem grants 4076 armor to all party members within 52 yards ( with 2/2 Totemic Reach) This totem will be used if you are playing with a Death Knight, considering that Horn of Winter and Strength of Earth Totem don’t stack with each other. While Battle Shout doesn’t stack with these buffs either, you can tell your Warrior to Commanding Shout (if you are playing with one) while you keep down Strength of Earth Totem.

Stoneclaw Totem: Without the glyph, this totem does nothing but applies a small shield (4143 damage absorbed) to all your totems. Yet, with the glyph, this totem becomes a very valuable defensive cooldown. On a 20 second cooldown, this totem (glyphed) will place a 16572 damage, non-dispellable shield upon the Shaman. This totem is one of the first things that you do when being focus fired. This totem should also be dropped upon placing down Mana Tide Totem if possible, due to the small shield applied to your other totems.

Earthbind Totem: This totem periodically pulses, applying a 50% slow to all enemies within 10 yards (13 with 2/2 Totemic Focus talent)

Though this totem may not seem very useful, it is a very strong tool for surviving against melee classes. If you are a Resto Shaman under focus fire versus melee, your global cooldowns should go something like this:

Apply Earth Shield to self.

Riptide on self.

StoneClaw Totem.

EarthBind Totem.

Ghost Wolf away.

It is important to remember to drop Stoneclaw and then Earthbind, because if you do it vice-versa. Your Stoneclaw will overlap Earthbind, replacing it. You will still keep the Stoneclaw Shield either way.

Fire Totems

Flametongue Totem: This is the fire totem that you will be using most of the time as Resto or Elemental. This totem grants a bonus 6% spellpower to all party members within a 52 yard range. This totem is exceptionally good when playing with casters, but is also a decent buff for the Shaman.

Searing Totem: This totem will shoot fire at enemies within 26 yards ( with 2/2 Totemic Reach). This totem will be used the most frequently as Enhancement, due to the Searing Flames talent. This totem can also be used as Elemental or Resto, in certain situations; Keeping rogues in combat easily, eating Warrior Spell Reflects, etc.

Water Totems

Healing Stream Totem: This totem heals party members within 39 yards for 961 health every 2 seconds. If you have the glyph as well, this totem will also grant 195 Fire/Frost/Nature resistance. Because of this glyph, this totem is basically known to replace Elemental Resistance Totem (also Grants 195 Fire/Frost/Nature Res.)

Mana Spring Totem: This totem grants 326 Mana every 5 seconds to all party members within 52 yards. Though this totem is usually overshadowed by the fact that Healing Stream Totem is usually down, it is good to use in very desperate Mana situations.

Totem of the Tranquil Mind: This totem reduces the casting/channeling pushback of all party members within 30 yards (39 with 2/2 Totemic Reach) by 30%. Though this totem isn’t used often, it can sometimes be dropped if you are healing a spellcleave while fighting a melee cleave, in order to maximize your casters’ potential.

Mana Tide Totem: This totem is for Restoration only, and is your best Mana-returning ability. Though just recently nerfed, this totem should be dropped at ~75-80% Mana. The reason you drop this totem so early is in order to be able to get a second Mana Tide off before you go oom (out of Mana), rather than dropping it when you are bone dry on Mana.

Air Totems

Wrath of Air Totem: This totem grants 5% spell haste to all party members within 52 yards. This should be used whenever playing with a spell caster. This totem also makes your Riptides tick faster, and your heals cast faster.

Windfury Totem: This totem grants 10% melee haste to all party members within 52 yards. In my opinion, this totem should only be used while playing a double physical dps comp.

Now even though these two totems that I’m going to explain ARE air totems, I feel that these totems are especially useful and should have some emphasis on their value.

Spirit Link Totem: Though this totem is only available through the Restoration tree, it is probably the Shamans’ single best spell. The tooltip description for this totem may be confusing to some, so I’ll break it down in to detail.

1) This totem reduces the damage taken of all party members within a 13 yard radius by 10%

2) This totem also equalizes the health of all party members within the radius (13 yards ). I’ll give an example of the ‘equalization’ process that this totem does.

Let’s say you have one party member at 1% health, and you’re at 100% health. If you drop the totem, it will instantly put you both at ~50% health. This totem can also be used while silence and hard-locked (Being hard-locked is when you are interrupted on your cast, rather than being ‘blanket’ silenced). Being able to use this totem while being hard locked is part of what makes it so powerful. This totem can also equalize the health of more than 1 person.

Grounding Totem: This is another one of the most useful totems. This totem will redirect 1 harmful spell to the grounding totem. While the idea of this totem is simple, the possibilities it offers can be amazing. You can use Grounding Totem to absorb many effective cooldowns such as

-Hammer of Justice

-Hex

-Freezing Trap

-Death Grip

-Death Coil

- All types of spellcaster interrupts (Wind Shear, Spell Lock, Counterspell)

Shocks

Frost Shock: This shock does some damage and applies a 50% slow to the enemy it hits. This can be useful in conjunction with Ghost Wolf to kite enemies.

Earth Shock: This Shock does some damage and reduces the range and melee attack speed of the enemy it hits by 20%. This shock can be useful to minimize the damage of enemy Melee and Hunters.

Flame Shock: This shock does some upfront damage and also applies a Damage over time effect on the enemies it hits. This can be used for keeping Rogues and Druids out of stealth. This shock also ensures that Lava Burst will be a critical strike, improving your burst.

Wind Shear

Wind Shear is one of the Shamans’ most important and powerful spells. Wind shear interrupts the enemy’s casting and locks them from using that school of spells for 2 seconds. This spell has a 6 second cooldown and is off the global cooldown. Wind Shear should be used nearly off-cooldown. Wind Shear is, in most cases, used to prevent Crowd Control affects from landing on yourself or other party members. Wind Shear can also be used affectively to stop damage dealing spells. A good example of this would be Shearing a Frostbolt when an enemy Mage uses Deep Freeze. Wind Shear is often underestimated by people do to its short interrupt time, yet it is one of the most game-breaking spells available for use.

Cleanse Spirit

I believe that Cleanse Spirit is also one of the abilities that is overlooked by many Shaman, especially Non-Restoration Shaman. For a Resto Shaman, Cleanse Spirit removes 1 Magic and 1 Curse affect from a friendly target. It is very important to be quick about dispelling your partners. If you are Enhancement or Elemental, Cleanse Spirit removes just one curse. Though this may not seem like a big deal, it can be very game-breaking. Some of the affects that you can remove from your partners:

-Hex

-Curse of Tongues

-Curse of Agony

-Curse of the Elements

If you are playing with a non-decursing healer (Priest, Paladin) as Enhancement or Elemental, this is where the ability will truly shine.

Pengax’s Restoration Shaman Guide goes over Gear, Talents, Gems, Glyphs and Reforging for Cataclysm.

Gear:
For the maximum resilience you can attain as a Restoration Shaman you will need to get 3 pieces of Wartide and 2 pieces of Thunderfist to benefit from the two piece bonus twice (400 resilience).

For two of the Wartide set you need the shoulder and chest pieces as they are the only two pieces with Spirit then for the third piece I would suggest the head. This would leave the legs and hands for the Thunderfist pieces.

For the off-set grab the following; Spirit neck, Spell Penetration cloak, Spirit bracers, Spirit belt, Spirit boots, Spirit Ring and a Hit ring.

Trinkets: Spirit Battlemaster’s and Resilience “Human Racial” Trinket.

For the weapon slots grab the following; Mace / Dagger, Spirit Shield and Spirit Relic.

Glyphs:

These are the base glyphs for all arena brackets as Restoration.

Talents:

This is the base spec for 3v3 / 5v5. The only changes you could make for 2v2 is if you find in your games you have a lot of free casting time is to take two points out of Focused Insight and put them into Telluric Currents.

Reforging:

Head: Reforge Mastery to Hit.
Neck: Nothing.
Shoulder: Nothing.
Chest: Nothing.
Bracers: Nothing.
Gloves: Reforge Crit to Hit.
Belt: Nothing.
Legs: Reforge Mastery to Hit.
Boots: Nothing.
Ringer 1 (Spirit): Spirit to Hit.
Ringer 2 (Hit): Nothing.
Battlemaster’s: Nothing.
Human Racial Trinket: Nothing.
Weapon: Crit to Spirit.
Shield: Nothing.
Relic: Nothing.

Gems:
As prices for epic gems are still quite high at the moment I’d suggest the rare gems for the following slots:

Blue Socket: Veiled Demonseye – 20 Intellect, 20 Hit - Once you’re Hit capped these slots should be filled by the Purified Demonseye – 20 Intellect, 20 Spirit
Red Socket: Willful Ember Topaz – 20 Intellect, 20 Reslience
Yellow Socket: Mystic Amberjewel – 40 Reslience
Meta Socket: Revitalizing Shadowspirit Diamond – 54 Spirit and 3% Critical Healing Effect

(If you’ve got Jewelcrafting as a profession use the Mystic Chimera’s Eye in your yellow sockets over the Mystic Amberjewel.)

Enchants: (Note: The Head and Shoulder enchants will be replaced by Resilience alternatives from their respective factions in patch 4.0.6)

Head: Arcum of Hyjal – 60 Intellect, 35 Critical Strike rating
Shoulders: Greater Inscription of Charged Lodestone, 50 Intellect, 25 Haste
Back: 70 Spell Penetration for the Rare Cloak and 50 Intellect for the Epic Cloak
Chest: Might Resilience, 40 Resilience
Bracers: Exceptional Spirit, 50 Spirit
Gloves: Haste; 50 Haste
Legs: Powerful Enchanted Spellthread, 95 Intellect and 80 Stamina
Boots: Enchant Boots, 50 Hit Rating
Weapon: Heartsong, proc chance to gain extra Spirit.
Shield: Superior Intellect, 100 Intellect.

The Result

Once you’ve got the above applied to your character you should have something along these lines (It will vary a lot depending on whether your PvP set is Rare or Epic):

> 4% chance to hit a level 85

> 3500 – 3800 Resilience

> 205 Spell Penetration

> 6400 Spell Healing

These stats will vary and things like Hit chance and Spell Penetration are very hard to cap perfectly so don’t worry if you’re over capped by 0.04% or something along those lines.

Novoz goes over tips and tricks to surviving in arenas as an Elemental Shaman while exerting as much pressure as possible.

Hey guys, I often get a lot of questions on how I am often able to survive so well in arena and on how I get to seem to always be right there casting spells when the kill comes. This is all about positioning. Elemental shamans are very special and unique in the way they need to position themselves, because we’ve got a lot of tools to move around the map, move others, stop others from moving, and just generally control the pace of the game with special ranged abilities like totems, shocks, and damage.

The basic idea of my positioning is to start somewhat next to a pillar. First, it allows me to quickly get out of harm’s way in case there are people focusing me. Elemental shamans excel at kiting melee, but when there are a lot of casters focusing you, and your grounding totem and shock are on cooldown, you simply don’t have many ways of slowing or stopping the damage. So, when I start sort of by a pillar, I have two options: If the opposing team has got melee characters on it, I can run in ghost wolf into the open to put them in harms way. Conversely, if the opposing team has got those pesky wizardy Harry Potters that just would love nothing more than to cast scary offensive spells onto me, I quickly go ghost wolf and run out of harm’s way behind a pillar. The best thing to do is not to panic.

Sure, there might be a hailstorm of damage incoming onto you within a few globals, but you’ve got to take hold of yourself and focus on moving in the right direction. Almost in every situation, as an elemental shaman, you can not run behind a pillar when there are melee on you. You want to run into the open with earthbind totem up. And under no circumstances shall you run directly at your opponent wizards if they’re channeling their destructive energies into your limited health pool! The best win shears and grounding totems won’t stop as much damage as a plain dalaran box or nagrand pillar. Remember, if your opponent does not have clear line of sight, he can not cast any more spells at you! Of course, pesky affliction warlocks do it over time, but hopefully your healer is there LoSing with you.

Now, it’s important not to run away from your healer (too much) when you’re losing. This is something that only practice and communication can take care of. Just make sure you don’t end up LoSing your healer too much, especially if they’re not a druid! They need to look at you to heal you, so try to move together as a unit.

You might ask me: Novoz, if I am always running behind pillars against casters, how can I get to do damage? It’s quite simple, really.

Either of two things can happen when you run behind a pillar — you opponents will follow you or they will not!

If they do not follow you, you will quickly get healed to full and will be able to peek out of the protective cover and shoot some critical lightning bolts and fiery lava bursts, and hopefully turn the tide of the battle into your favor. In the most dangerous positions, remember that you can still heal yourself a bit, like in situations where your opponents have casted crowd control spells onto your healer.

In case your opponents follow you, you can make them run in a circle around the pillar, chasing you. Now, you’ve got the advantage of ghost wolf form and earthbind totem to stop them dead in their tracks. So imagine you start running clockwise around a pillar, and your opponents follow you. If you drop an earthbind totem at around 6 O’clock, and keep running to 12 O’clock, your opponents will get stuck behind. Usually, if they chase, the healer might still stay in the open. He is the prime target to target switch to! You’ve got him in your sights, you’ve got his allies lagging behind in your earthbind totem. You will, after a few tries, land a kill!

The other kind of scenario is a more typical one. Imagine you’re fighting a team and you’re putting great damage into one opponent, and they’re just running away from you. If you’re going to be attacked, you want to put yourself into a spot where you can catch up to the person you want to kill, while line of sighting the other enemies. Often, when an inexperienced opponent is trying to run away, he will run in such a way that he is line of sighting his own allies! So if you stick close enough to him, you will be perfectly safe as well. Just make sure the rest of your team is aware of the adjustment you’re making, and make sure they’re close by! You’ll often be in position to thunder storm them into the open, and there is no one that’s asking for a juicy lava burst than a helpless victim of a thunder storm, left all alone in the open, far far away from any help.

Nevershock goes over his view of how to gem/gear your resto shaman for arena!

Hey guys it’s Nevershock and today i’d like to talk about some of the gemming/gearing that i see to work the best in arena.

First off i’d like to go over on just how effective resilience is for a resto shaman. Currently i am resil capped in my double 2 piece resto set. This means i have 3 piece ringmail on and 2 piece mail (it doesn’t matter what pieces). Resil cap means that you take 30% less damage from everything! This is great because resto shamans are by far the squishiest healers in the game. Having that extra reduction is extremely important when playing comps where you can get swapped to pretty easily. An example of this in action is a match i had vs an RLS where i got swapped to into a full kidney with a full row of dots and haunt and lived because of how much resil i had on.

I was able to pop out of that and battlemaster, NS, Healing wave to save us the game. Just a game like that happens all the time and if you’re able to stop damage like that it’s totally worth it in my opinion. Some shamans gear haste when they play resto, i would say never do this because it’s about worthless since your tidal waves buff gives you plenty of haste to use healing wave but if it’s what you like then you need to play what you like. Whats a good amount of spellpower to have though? I couldn’t tell you 100% sure because shamans heals seem to have a cap on how effective spell power is after a while. I could have 3200 spell power or 3400 spell power and really not notice the difference. A good cap to aim for is around 3200 spell power though you see yourself able to do around 20k crit healing waves at that spell power.

So far we’ve covered resil capping yourself and whats a good spell power to be at but whats a good health or mana to be at? Well this is really unknow i play with around 20.5k mana in full wrathful and almost 27k health. I find these stats to suite me just fine when i play any of the comps that i play when in arena. However this can change solely on preference of game play. Some people are more comfortable with more health and some with more mana. Mana issues can be resolved from speccing a different way as well. Gemming is probably some of the most important though. When i gem my gear i gem for Spell power—X so it has to have some sort of benefit besides spell power on it. For example 12 spell power 10 resilience.

Heres a quick run over of BASE stats to have when you’re gearing your shaman.

1415 resilience (cap i believe, or atleast get close to this)

3200 spell power

Crit chance is dependent on gear setup and spec

Around 85 spell pen for mages

Around 20k mana

Around 26k health

Nevershock reveals the personally developed secret Shaman tricks he uses to dominate in arenas.

Hey in this guide were going to go over some of my tricks i use in arena that allow me to get so high rated. These tricks if used correctly can completely stop a teams advance in pressure or save your team mates from being killed. These tricks consist of totems that include tremor totem, and grounding totem.

TREMOR TOTEM:

A lot of people do not realize how effective tremor totem can be when used correctly (even though it makes me mad ). The trick is to use the totem to break fear as soon as it’s cast. This means that when one of your team mates is feared you can simply drop the totem as long as you’re in 30 yard range of them for it to instantly break the fear on your ally. This is an extremely powerful tool when playing with melee or eve casters that can’t use their abilities due to the range of the target. An example would be your rogue having sprint up and sitting on a warlock or priest and the warlock or priest uses their AOE fear and your rogue runs at 100% speed the opposite way making a huge distance and pressure drop.

GROUNDING TOTEM:

This is my pride and joy for tricks that i have learned over the years. My grounding totem trick has stunned people when i told them exactly how it works. It’s a simple process but can be hard to do mid combat. We all know what grounding totem does. It redirects the next spell cast at you or one of your allys that are in the range of the totem. The trick works by simply abusing the range of your totems. Have yourself positioned away from your team mates and place your grounding totem behind you so that the AURA ONLY EFFECTS YOU you can do this by simply judging the distance to your team mates. This basically is a shamans version of AURA MASTERY. You cannot be silenced while you’re in this aura unless someone casts a spell specifically at you. This allows you to heal under the most insane pressure because you know that nobody can stop you. This is also unbelievable against death knights who try to death grip you strangulate you because they can’t because you are basically immune to EVERYTHING . Use these simple totem tricks and i guarantee that you will rise in rating by atleast 100 points or more. These are my finest tricks finally released to you guys! ENJOY!

Hey guys today i’m going to discuss 2v2 with a shaman and a rogue, the shaman being a resto shaman and the rogue being mutilate.

BASICS:

1. Firstly you’re going to want to gear a balance between crit and mp5 this way you will be able to drink while being able to put out some nice heals at the same time. I would go with around 300 mp5 and 22% crit for a good balance between the 2 but you can tweak with it yourself depending on preference and go from there on what you would rather have. Healing wave will work fine too with the rogue taking 20% more healing you can put out some pretty hefty heals.

2. You can spec depending on preference but i would go with lesser healing wave for this comp for fast heals because the combo is meant to be played at a fast pace to go effectively. You can however be healing wave spec and play the outlast game which i have done several times in the past and go with drinks and cooldown usage.

3. Force trinkets as soon as you can, this is very possible with this comp because you have very high offensive abilities and can put out tons of damage in a short span of time.

STRATS VS COMMON COMPS

Paladin Warrior:

Have your rogue start on warrior and try to get a hex on the paladin but make sure you purge off sacred shield because this will cause the warrior to take tons more damage because sacred shield absorbs a lot of a rogues damage whenever it procs. With the paladin hexed i would instantly blow bloodlust because it causes a sort of panic effect sometimes. With bloodlust up turn to the warrior and start to do a dps rotation because your rogue should be taking no damage due to the warrior being stunlocked at that point in time. I recommend a lavaburst–frost shock—rocket gloves combination. This can put out around 5k+ damage in a 2 second time frame. This will cause the paladin to panic and either trinket the hex or bubble in some instances depending on how much damage the warrior has taken at this point. Always shock as many heals as you can and make sure you have the paladin full purged for when the paladin divine pleas so that you can instantly purge it off and win the mana war if it comes down to it. With the paladin out of bubble and a trinket swap to him and try to go for the kill with a hex on the warrior so he cannot peel in any way. You can also simply kill the warrior with the same strat (blind/hex) on the paladin for the kill.

Paladin Warlock:

This comp will be played in a similar way by starting on the warlock and throwing a blind/hex on the paladin to try to force his trinket and/or bubble. This comp can be tricky however with constant fears on the rogue or you (hopefully you will not get feared). I would start off shocking the warlocks cast to make sure he is not getting out as much pressure as he wants as well as stopping his fears. With the paladins trinkets force hex the warlock and swap hard onto the paladin and try to force his bubble in a kidney shot. Swap back to the warlock and start doing as much damage as possible while trying to get as much CC and shocks off (on cooldown of course) as possible. If these starts do not force a kill after a while try swapping to the pets really fast and killing them. Always make sure you fake cast when casting important spell so you do not get spell locked by the warlocks pet.

Druid Warlock:

For druid warlock the same pretty much goes as paladin however a druid can be swapped to a little bit faster out of blinds. You’re going to want to get the druid with no hots before you swap either by purging or sitting on the lock until they do.

Druid Warrior:

For druid warrior the same goes as paladin and warlock combination. Swapping to the druid to force barkskin and going back to the warrior. Druids can be a pain though with cyclone so figure out a way to stay out of LOS and shock the cyclones to be sure your rogue can do full damage.

Shaman Warrior:

Shaman warrior is like hilarious compared to any other team. Shamans are easily killable and switchable to just make sure you’re swapping to targets with no earth shield. The little trick i use vs this comp is to hex the warrior while the shaman is in a kidney shot and force a trinket from the warrior and full blind and rape the shaman. ***This is a very clutch strat***

Shaman Warlock:

For shaman warlock you’re going to want to swap back and forth from the lock to the shaman, you’re going to end up killing the shaman most likely with shocks and groundings on fears to be sure that your rogue doesn’t get feared off. Again you can hex the warlock while the shaman is kidney shot so he can’t cleanse it and force a trinket and full blind.

Shaman Rogue (mirror):

This can go either way, you’re going to either have to outplay the shaman and get him in hexes and kill the rogue our outplay the rogue and get him to trinket something and blind/hex him while the shaman is kidney shot and unload into him for a kill.

Priest Rogue:

This can be really hard depending on the skill of the priest and rogue. For some unkown reason priests take a million times less damage then shamans when they are sat on by rogues (fair am i right? lol) anyways you’re going to want to have your rogue on the priest and peel for you if you’re getting destroyed. Try to hex the rogue by faking a heal or something and he will trinket that and be blinded full or he will eat it and wait 10 seconds **make sure you flame shock the rogue while hexed so he can’t restealth!** You’re going to want to score a kill on the priest or rogue depending on cooldown and trinket usage.

Priest Warlock:

For this comp you’re going to want to make sure your tremor totem is down all the time because it can go south in a bad fear, however this comp is much easier than other warlock comps. You can choose either target so just open with a blind on the warlock and go hard on the priest try to force the locks trinket and try to make him eat kidneys all day. Remember to hex the priest when you go on the warlock or the other way around so that someone is out of the game at all times.

Priest Mage:

For this comp you have to make sure you don’t get sheeped so hug a pillar all day long and let your rogue do the work. Shock sheeps so he can’t keep anyone under wraps while you destroy the priest. Mage is a possibility but it’s hard just hex the mage and force trinkets, blocks, trinkets etc. You will eventually get a kill on one or the other. **I would not bloodlust on this comp, it sounds dumb but mages spell stealing bloodlust can make things go south pretty fast**

Mage Rogue:

This comp can be a pain. This really depends on how well you can shock and LOS and how well your rogue can lock down the targets. You’re going to want to kill the rogue or the mage in a perfect situation. Make sure you shock polys and do not trinket unless 100% needed because you will be CCd for like 10 minutes and you will lose the match because your rogue will not live. **groundings and shocks and heavy offensive pressure**

Alright guys that’s it for this shaman rogue guide! If you have anymore comps or questions let me know and i will adapt it. I will make a video pretty soon on some quick games to show how some of this stuff goes down! Thanks!!
